Saturday 1st September
Open Data Manchester - Joy Diversion | Defiant Event Space
11am - 5pm
After the success of the first two Joy Diversions, we’re running a third day on Saturday 1st September!
Often viewed as a functional place of work, retail and leisure, our city centre bounded by Trinity Way, Great Ancoats Street and the Mancunian Way is imbued with history, iniquity, celebration and endeavour. Let us go out and find what’s out there, discover the forgotten spaces, create stories and map our city.
Starting with maps of the city from over 150 years ago, we will propose expeditions to uncharted territories, revisits to previously explored places, strange meanderings and any other diversions that people fancy.

Book Launch - "Reboot" by Jason Stockwood | Defiant Events Space
6.00pm - 8.30pm
Jason Stockwood (@jstockwood) is Group CEO of Simply Business, twice recognised by The Sunday Times as the UK’s best company to work for, and himself awarded the accolade of best leader in 2016.
"Reboot" makes the case for the optimistic impact of technologies in the workplace, both to enhance engagement and ultimately improve productivity. Countering the dystopian view that society will be decimated as machines take over, "Reboot" culminates in the strong argument for implementing AI and experimentation, providing a route to a four-day working week. "Reboot" is attempting to be the catalyst for a fresh debate about the future of work.
"Reboot" has been described as “Enlightened. Inspiring. and importantly full of compassion and humanity. The modern playoff for people in business today, who also want to be there tomorrow”.
Jason will be joined in conversation by Matt Atkinson Chief Membership Officer Co-op Group, Lou Cordwell OBE and Founder of Magnetic North and Emer Coleman, Technology Engagement Director Co-op Digital.

Wednesday 19th September
The Federation Presents: Toxic Tech with Sara Wachter-Boettcher and Guests| Defiant Events Space
6pm - 9pm
Buying groceries, tracking our health, finding a date: whatever we want to do, odds are we can do it online - but how often do we question the design of these products and experiences? Many of the services we rely on are full of oversights, biases, and downright ethical nightmares. Chatbots that harass women, sign up forms that fail anyone who’s not straight. Social media sites that send peppy messages about dead relatives. Algorithms that put more black people behind bars.
The algorithms Facebook and other tech companies use to boost engagement – and increase profits – have led to spectacular failures of sensitivity and worse. How can we fight back?
Sara takes an unflinching look at the values, processes, and assumptions that lead to these and other problems, demystifying the tech industry and leaving those of us on the other side of the screen better prepared to make informed choices about the services we use—and demand more from the companies behind them.
Sara is a Philadelphia-based web consultant and the author of two additional books for web professionals: Design for Real Life, with Eric Meyer and Content Everywhere. She helps organisations make sense of their digital content and is a recognised worldwide conference speaker.
Sara will be joined by a guest panel thereafter. (Panellists TBC.)

Displacement in Technology Workshop | Solidarity Event Space
10.30am - 12.00pm
Displacement in tech is an ever-growing concern, but as an industry we are struggling to
define what displacement is, and therefore determine where and how our organisations'
practises are having an impact on the people, communities and industries we serve.
We’ll be bringing together tech pioneers and social changemakers to co-create
a solid definition of displacement and shape a decision-making tool that enables tech
creators to consider the positive and negative societal consequences of their outputs.
Our first “Defining Displacement in Tech” consultation will explore the parameters of
displacement, and bring together a working group of individuals and organisations keen
to make progress and set a precedent for tech ethics across the industry.
